Women Take Up Challenge From Turkey To Post Black And White Photos
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you would have realized that there is a new black and white challenge that women are participating in.
Simply explained as a women empowering women, the challenge actually has a back story to it. It resurfaced again in Turkey when women are being murdered recently.
The challenge started as a way to stand in solidarity with the lives lost to femicide. There is an alarming number of women going missing and murdered by men known to them, more often by family members and partners.
“Turkish people wake up every day to see a black and white photo of a woman who has been murdered on their Instagram feed, on their newspapers, on their TV screens,” Instagram user @beelzeboobs wrote. “The black and white photo challenge started as a way for women to raise their voice. To stand in solidarity with the women, we have lost. To show that one day, it could be their picture that is plastered across news outlets with a black and white filter on top.”
The challenge caught the attention of many famous women around the world and they started posting shots of themselves in monochrome.
A search on Instagram will pull up thousands of black and white photographs of women who chose to be part of the movement.
The challenge arrived on our shores as well as various women participating by uploading their own monochrome shots with meaningful captions.
While it is good to show support for a meaningful cause, we must not forget the original purpose of the challenge which is to honour the lives of the women lost in senseless violence.
These are some of the women who lost their lives and this challenge was started because there shouldn’t be more of them.
Reporter’s Opinion: This challenge is not new; it will resurface every year for some cause. Last year it was for cancer awareness and sometime back it was for violence against women.
However, this year’s challenge is rather grim.
It reminds us of the fragility of life, and we should cherish people when they’re alive. These people shouldn’t just be another statistic, they had names and lives that was cut short by someone who decided to play God.
Women shouldn’t have to go through abuse at the hands of men they trust. It is terrifying to know that you can be laughing today and the next you’ll be lying cold in the ground, with the last face you looked at was someone you know and trust.
