Viewers Cancels Netflix Subscription As Highly Sexualized ‘Cuties’ Continues To Air
Cancel Netflix is trending once again after they chose to stream the controversial “Cuties” despite the backlash against the coming of age movie when the Netflix trailer came out.
Cuties drew a lot of criticisms because it depicted young girls twerking for an adult audience. The movie however was trying to show how children lose their innocence while navigating the world of social media and trying to “fit in”.
Maimouna Doucoure, the director of the movie purposely used uncomfortable images to start a conversation about the sexualization of girls, policing their sexuality and the effect of social media on children as they learn these behaviors without truly understanding the consequences of their acts.
The problem arises when Netflix decided to promote the movie in a highly sexualized light, the way they always do for the rest of their shows. However, doing so this time, got them in a sticky spot because these are young girls dressed provocatively. QAnon jumped on the hashtag to propagate their conspiracy theories and harass the makers of the movie.
Twitter is now littered with hashtags like #savethechildren, #cancelnetflix from both genuinely concerned individuals as well as those who are riding on it for political reasons.
When every female pop star in the world acts like this, children who look up to them will emulate their behavior. I cannot stand to watch any of these popstars that constantly equate music with horniness. Music is a communication from spirit, not from my vagina. #CancelNetflx pic.twitter.com/6kbAE1yM1X — Artemis X (@ArtemisXMusic) September 13, 2020
In all honesty, the movie is a social commentary. It is meant to make people uncomfortable with the images because this is what’s happening in our society today. Doucoure wanted to bring across the message of how children today are in danger as they go on about their day on social media unsupervised.
It is amazing how a movie meant to spark a conversation took a life of its own simply because it was released at a time where the political scene of America is in a state of uncertainty.
Reporter’s Opinions: I watched the movie in an attempt to understand the big hooha.
She managed to make me feel uncomfortable as an audience as well as made me think as an educator and an adult. Are we doing enough to protect the innocence of our children?
It was hard for our generation to transition from analog to digital, but we had the chance to trial and error. We had the sensibility to keep most of our lives private because that was the norm for us growing up. We had books as well as the internet to refer to and the Internet was still a wealth of information then.
Today, it has also become a database of disinformation unfortunately.
For the kids nowadays, it is not as easy. It is hard enough dealing with hormonal changes and peer pressure. Now, there is a new monster for them to deal with. Social media can be a boon and a curse simultaneously.
It is not easy growing up navigating a world where social media plays a very important role in our lives. And that should be enough reason for us to want to ensure that we are the first source of knowledge for children before social media.
