A video of Prince Mateen and rumored beau, Anisha Isa Kalebic, went viral on Twitter for all the wrong reasons. The prince of Brunei Darussalam was seen to have walked in front of Anisha, which is deemed as “ungentlemanly” by netizens.

The tweet posted by Indonesia Keras gained over a million views with a cheeky caption meant to trigger varied responses from the Twitterati.
From the annoyed…
…to the woke.
Whichever Patek he’s wearing, probably it is a limited edition, made for royals only.

Mateen and Anisha are cousins. Keeping the bloodline pure? https://t.co/Tl5godMrqV — Elessar (@shafiqahelessar) July 13, 2021
But there are those who seem to understand that it is just protocol.
The video was a snippet from the wedding that Prince Mateen and Anisha attended last year.
It is protocol for royals to walk in accordance to age and line of succession when arriving at events like weddings and such. It is also encouraged in Islam for men to walk ahead of women, not because of hierarchy, rather it is to protect the women from the lustful gaze of men.
Being the prince of a conservative Muslim country like Brunei Darussalam, it is only natural for Prince Mateen to observe decorum strictly when he is not married yet to Anisha.
Who is Abdul Mateen and Anisha?
Abdul Mateen Bolkiah became an internet sensation for his charming good looks and a love for big cats. He was the talk of the town last year when he announced that he was looking to settle down.
His rumored beau, Anisha Isa is said to be the sister of his close friend, Daniel Isa and the granddaughter of Pehin Dato Haji Isa, a minister and advisor to the royal family of Brunei Darussalam. They are also rumoured to be cousins according to some.
Reporter’s Opinions:It takes a 36 second snippet for everyone to come up with their own conclusions about a relationship that remains unconfirmed.
However, if they are truly cousins, I am not surprised. There is this obsession with keeping bloodline pure amongst the royals.
They are royals, they have their own lives to live and protocols to follow. We may not understand it but that doesn’t mean that it is wrong. The western mentality of letting women walk infront of men may seem gentlemanly but in Islam, men are encouraged to walk in front of women to protect the women from the men’s gaze.
There is no right or wrong when it comes to customs but when one is preferred over the other to the point where only the western custom is considered the norm, that’s where the problem lies.
If you take a look at all the royals in the nusantara region during events, the kings either walk in line with their wives or they’re slightly in front of them. It is a custom but that does not mean that they’re not protective of their women or that they are flexing their misogynistic muscles.
