SIA flight bound for Singapore experiences severe turbulence, fatalities reported
A Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight from London to Singapore encountered severe turbulence on May 20, 2024, resulting in two fatalities and multiple injuries.
Flight SQ321 was diverted to Bangkok, landing at 3:45 pm Singapore time on May 21. The Boeing 777-300ER had 211 passengers and 18 crew members on board.
SIA expressed condolences and is providing assistance to those affected, working with Thai authorities. Over 30 people were reportedly injured. Regular updates will be provided on SIA's social media accounts.
On June 11, Singapore Airlines has extended compensation offers to passengers affected by the turbulence incident on flight SQ321. Passengers with minor injuries have been offered US$10,000 (S$13,500), while those with more serious injuries have been invited to discuss personalized compensation. An advance payment of US$25,000 has been offered to passengers requiring long-term medical care. Additionally, all passengers will receive a full refund of their airfare.
The incident occurred on May 21, over the Irrawaddy Basin in Myanmar, causing the Boeing 777-300ER to make an emergency landing in Bangkok due to a medical emergency. A 73-year-old British passenger died of a suspected heart attack, and dozens were injured. There were 211 passengers and 18 crew members on board. Injured passengers were treated at local hospitals in Bangkok.
Passengers received $1,000 each upon departure from Bangkok to cover immediate expenses. Singapore Airlines has been covering medical expenses and facilitating travel arrangements for family members of the injured. Delay compensation will also be provided in accordance with EU or British regulations. All affected passengers have been contacted via email with compensation details and claim procedures.
