Science Centre cancels discussion on Sex & Gender after public criticisms
Science Centre Singapore canceled its June 14 event discussing sex and gender after public feedback expressed concerns about the content and speakers.
The event, meant for those aged 18 and above, featured drag queen Becca D'Bus, Oogachaga youth counsellor Alexander Teh, and NUS Associate Professor Mie Hiramoto.
The event has sparked controversy with critics on Facebook being "appalled" and questioning the scientific background of the speakers.
However, others pointed out that the social sciences is a scientific field as well, and that the differences between sex and gender are well studied and even taught in universities. Others pointed out that the event was meant for people above 18 years old and not meant for children.
Nonetheless, the event was cancelled and ticket holders can expect a refund.
The event was part of the Science Centre's Science Cafe series, which hosts discussions on various scientific topics.
