PM Lee mentioned that the decision for succession is a crucial one in Singapore to ensure continuity and stability of leadership.

“This decision is a crucial one for Singapore. It will ensure the continuity and stability of leadership that are the hallmarks of our system.” – PM Lee

He also said that the right to lead is earned and not inherited.

“The right to lead is not inherited. It has to be earned afresh by each generation of leaders. Singapore will always need a strong team in charge, with a leader who can bring others together, and draw out the best of each team member. I have every confidence that Lawrence and his team will continue to give their best for Singapore and Singaporeans.” – PM Lee

Minister Lawrence Wong confirmed the announcement in his own Facebook post, thanking the rest of his colleagues for their trust and confidence in him to lead the 4G team.

He mentioned that his colleagues have stood shoulder to shoulder in the fight against the pandemic and the experience strengthened their resolve to steer Singapore safely through a crisis.

“It is my privilege to be called upon to lead this team. I will do my utmost to uphold this responsibility. But as we have been reminded many times, the right to lead cannot be inherited. Together with the rest of the 4G team, I will continue to serve Singaporeans wholeheartedly, and strive to earn the trust and support of each and every one of our fellow citizens.”

Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam gave his stamp of approval in his own Facebook post, stating that Min Wong has it in him to lead the new generation of ministers.

This is true, Min Wong seems to have the soft skills to win the public over. The leaders of old have done their job to the best of their ability, it’s time to bring in fresh blood.

An endorsement by the public’s favourite Minister will definitely boost confidence for Min Wong’s leadership.

However, many seem to still want SM Tharman to be the next PM.

Min Heng said that he is glad that Min Wong decided to accept the responsibility of leading the 4G team.

“What we need is a next leader who has the well-being of Singaporeans and Singapore at heart, who has the integrity and commitment to serve, and the ability to forge new paths and bring people together. I believe that Lawrence has these qualities. I have found him to be a leader who considers things carefully, is able to bring people together, and has conviction to do what’s right for Singapore.” – DPM Heng Swee Keat

Adjustments to Cabinet appointments will be made and announced in due course after the appointment. Leading the 4G team paves the way for Min Wong to be the next Prime Minister. Let’s wish him all the best in leading Singapore in the future.

Reporter’s Opinions: Frankly I am not surprised by the appointment. When he became the Minister of Finance, that was a sure sign that he would end up leading the party eventually.

However, I do wish that SM Tharman was given a chance to be PM. He is a brilliant man with leadership qualities. But hey, he’s done his best and he will be able to guide the new leaders.

Here’s to Min Wong leading his team and the country to excellence.
