Paper Masks For Burning On Sale Shows How Up To Date The Joss Paper Industry Is
The joss paper industry has always been creative and a lucrative business once upon a time when people would custom-made effigies to be burned.
From condos to bungalows, even banks once upon a time, there is nothing you can’t order to be burned to send to the ancestors. But paper masks? Now that elicited chuckles from netizens.
Singapore made mask wearing mandatory since the start of CB but to think that the ghosts would need it is rather surprising. But it is a reflection of how up to date the joss paper industry is.
In a post shared to a Facebook Group, light-hearted banter between the netizens is seen.
Well, what could be a better reminder for the stubborn offenders?
How naïve if you think the gates are only opened once a year. They walk among us.
After 14 days still must wear mask and have social distance, how troublesome for them to breathe down your neck.
You really want to see them in a group of 5 under the block?
HISTORY OF HUNGRY GHOST FESTIVAL
It is believed that the gates of hell are open during the 7th lunar month of the Chinese calendar. During this month, the ghosts of the ancestors are said free to roam to seek food and entertainment.
Joss paper items are believed to have value in the afterlife and money is often burned in order to send it over to the other side for the ancestors to bribe the gatekeepers. They believe that by burning paper effigies like houses, gadgets, etc will appease the ghosts. Families will pay tribute to other homeless ghosts so that it won’t intrude into their lives and bring misfortune.
Large feasts are often held on the 14th day to please the ghosts and ward off bad luck. Getai shows are also held usually as a form of entertainment for these otherworldly spirits.

If you notice, the first row of such shows is usually left empty. It is believed that the space is reserved for the ghosts who are watching the shows.
Reporter’s Opinion: Well, well, well. I was wondering if I’d see the new QR scanners being made in paper but the masks?!
Imagine, die already with the intention to haunt a social distancing ambassador, sekali kena slap $300 fine because never wear mask. Like damn suay lor. But they pay you in hell notes. How, ai mai?
But I agree with one of the commentors who said that it is a good reminder for those recalcitrant non mask wearing offenders.
