PAP Sengkang’s Labubu mascot raises eyebrow
Netizens have been questioning the PAP Sengkang team’s recent campaign tactic: a Labubu doll dressed in the signature all-white PAP attire.
The plush doll debuted in a 22 September Tiktok video that publicised the team’s grocery distribution drive for seniors at Compassvale Crescent.
Sengkang GRC is currently held by the Workers’ Party.
Labubu is an elf creature sold as a toy keychain by Chinese company Pop Mart from 2019.
It became viral across Asia since April 2024, when Lisa of Kpop group Blackpink posted photos of herself with the doll on social media.
In Singapore, limited edition Labubu dolls caused so much chaos at a Pop Toy Show in August that the police had to be brought in.
Some netizens were delighted by the PAP Labubu and asked where they could get one.
However, others saw it as a desperate tactic to win votes in the upcoming election, and said that the PAP should be working on solving the problems of the people instead.
Several also brought up the legal and ethical issue of using toys as a political tool.
