National swimmer, Quah Ting Wen, frustrated by last-minute decision by Singapore Aquatics
Swimmer Quah Ting Wen will not join Singapore's squad for the upcoming Paris Olympics, as confirmed by Singapore Aquatics (SAQ) on Monday, July 8
Despite being part of the women's 4x100m medley relay team that qualified in February and being initially confirmed by SAQ to represent Singapore, SAQ decided to send Gan Ching Hwee instead, who will compete in the 4x100m medley relay and the individual 800m and 1,500m freestyle events
Despite appealing to World Aquatics, the decision stood, and SAQ will send five athletes to compete in seven events
Quah expressed her disappointment and exhaustion from dealing with the situation but hopes SAQ will review its selection policy to prevent similar issues in the future. She appreciated the support from individuals who tried to help her
SAQ President Mark Chay acknowledged Quah's dedication and looks forward to her participation in future events, including the 2025 World Aquatics Championships and SEA Games.
Quah Ting Wen’s brother Quah Zheng Wen, also a national swimmer, took to his instagram to share his disappointment at the decision made by SAQ which he deemed “disgusting”
Netizens were dismayed by the last minute change and felt that it was unfair to Quah. Others felt that it was not SAQ’s fault that World Aquatics also rejected her appeal
