French Netflix Movie, Cuties, Draws Backlash For Hypersexualising 11 Year Old Girls
French movie, Cuties, due to be released on Netflix on September 9, draws backlash from the public for hypersexualizing 11-year-old girls. The poster used by Netflix to promote the movie raises eyebrows when compared to the original French version.
It is a cause for concern as such depiction of young girls will have unsavory consequences. It is akin to priming them for sexual predators.
It revolves around Amy, an 11-year-old girl who lives in a conservative Senegalese Muslim household where ambitions like dancing is frowned upon. Amy is torn between upholding her family values and pursuing her dream to be part of a dance crew. Her liberation came when she joined a dance crew called the Cuties where she embraced her femininity post puberty.
The problem lies not in the conservative values being shown, rather it is the depiction of 11-year-old girls being dressed in revealing clothes and posing suggestively as liberation.
Netflix description of the movie was also rather obscene compared to the French one.
“Amy, 11, becomes fascinated with a twerking dance crew. Hoping to join them, she starts to explore her femininity, defying her family’s tradition.”
They have since changed the synopsis to a subtle one.
“Eleven-year-old Amy starts to rebel against her conservative traditions when she becomes fascinated with a free-spirited dance crew.”
Netflix apologized for the hypersexualized poster, but the problem doesn’t end there. It is the perpetuation of the “oppressed Muslim” stereotypes and the poor depiction of girls discovering their sexuality at a tender age.
Netizens did not hold back from slamming both Netflix and the movie.

Duh conservative values = oppressive, the theme is focused on hypersexualized cultures, but in their attempts to portray this, they’ve sexualized 11 year olds, should’ve made a documentary — Rifqa (@ryfryk) August 20, 2020
While there are still oppressed individuals out there, it is more of a cultural issue rather than a religion issue. Even then, there is no reason to repeat the same rhetoric.
But the glaring problem in this movie is children performing a sensual dance form for adult audiences.
Reporter’s Opinion: While I understand how girls explore and embrace their sexuality post-puberty, this would have been better as a documentary film instead.
Watching the trailer, it makes me uncomfortable to watch little girls touching themselves intimately, biting their fingers suggestively, with the intention to attract the attention of their imaginary audiences.
Yes, it is a problem because in the era we are living in today, the younger generation is exposed to a lot of questionable content. They have impressionable minds and it is our duty to ensure that they aren’t corrupted by ideas that are shown to them before they’re ready.
I stress on the importance of sexual education and understanding the emotions that comes along with puberty, but I draw the line at children performing dance forms that aren’t age appropriate.
To them, it is just freedom of expression, but to the predators that hide amongst us, it is an invitation for them to continue living with their sick fantasies.
