In an effort to upcycle used delivery bags, Grab collaborated with Suri Lifestyle and Sarawak based designer, Neng Kho Razali to breathe new life into them.
Killing two birds with one stone, the fashion label turned the used carriers into school bags, pencil cases and fanny packs that are then donated to orphanages.

These upcycled items were donated to Yayasan Anak Yatim and Tadika Istika Jaya orphanages, SK Long Pelutan primary school, and Grab’s driver-partners.
Netizens applauded the initiative and expressed interest in purchasing the items.
Despite the overwhelming response for the products, Neng explained that the bags are not for sale.
While it may seem straightforward to others, the whole process of upcycling is rather tedious. According to Grab’s annual report 2020, the used carriers are difficult and expensive to recycle.

The carriers are sanitized, ripped apart and then segregated into usable parts before being repurposed into new bags.

Next comes the designing and assembly.

The final pieces are sewn together to form a bright green backpack that’s big enough to fit schoolbooks and it comes with a pouch that can be used to store masks.

A total of 200 Grab food carriers were transformed into school bags, fanny packs and pencil cases that were distributed to the orphanages.

Quoting Neng Kho Razali, “alone we can do so little, in a team we can do so much!”. Kudos to Grab and partners for the corporate social responsibility initiative that will benefit the underprivileged in the pandemic.
Reporter’s Opinions: It is heartwarming to see such initiatives especially in times like this.
Who would have thought that Grab Food bags can become limited edition merch exclusively distributed to orphanages?
