Ex MP Iswaran's resignation amid corruption scandal
Facing 27 charges related to his corruption investigation by CPIB, ex-Transport Minister S. Iswaran has resigned. He is accused of wrongfully receiving more than $380,000 from Malaysian businessman Ong Beng Seng, as well as obstructing the course of justice.
He pleaded not guilty to all charges, but offered to return all salaries and allowances he obtained since the start of the investigations. PM Lee accepted Iswaran’s resignation, but expressed disappointment and reiterated Singapore’s strong anti-corruption stance.
Malaysian journalists and observers were quick to compare the handling of the case to their own domestic situation, while others noted the timing of the case in Singapore’s political transition.
