The whole purpose of the “No Backpack” challenge is to raise awareness of 120 million children around the world that go to school without a bag. They hand carry all their essential items to and fro.

While the challenge is predominantly popular in the West, it is nice to see some local action as well.

Reporter’s Opinions: Frankly this isn’t the first time I see students going to school without a backpack.

Back when I was in secondary school, it was a norm. We had students who came to school with just a plastic file or a fanny pack. There are those who brought bags along merely for fashion because it is empty. Books and notes were kept in false ceilings and under the table because our textbooks were freaking heavy.

And yeah, I was one of them. My sling bag was filled with snacks, a journal, a novel and my pencil case.
