Causeway traffic down by 20% on first day of VEP
There has been a noticeable drop in the number of cars entering JB from Singapore on the first day of the VEP scheme.
JB officials reported a 20% drop in the number of vehicles entering Johor, but said it was unclear if the drop was due to the VEP scheme.
Traffic monitoring service checkpoint.sg also showed a noticeable drop in traffic volume throughout the day.
Despite concerns of penalties for entering.
JB without a VEP, the Malaysian Road Transport Department earlier assured Singaporean motorists that they could still do so for now as enforcement is being rolled out in phases.
As of September 25, 62,635 Singaporean vehicles had activated their VEP tags. Drivers can obtain their permits at several VEP installation centres in Johor and Singapore.
Netizens were quick to comment about the drop in traffic to the Malaysian state, with many sarcastically praising the Malaysian government for finding a solution to ease the traffic congestion at one of the world’s busiest border crossings.
Some also highlight that the VEP initiative may hurt the economy, especially with the year end holidays around the corner.
