Are Local Graduates Too Demanding? Employer Shares Experience With 7 Demanding Potential Candidates
Are new local graduates becoming more demanding when it comes to jobs or they value their well-being over the demands of a job that may not sustain them in the long run?
In a Facebook post that has since gone viral shared on Delane Lim’s page, he shares about his struggle on hiring young graduates in the pandemic.
From specific work timings to having a team of junior staff, the demands vary but it seems to reek of one thing; entitlement. These candidates, however, have excellent CVs according to Delane.
But are their demands justified in a place like Singapore where work-life balance takes a backseat in favor of accelerated productivity and meeting targets?
Another user, Raj Singh countered Delane’s post with a few questions of his own like where was the advertised pay for the job offered.
Raj raises valid questions about the location of the office, the hours required and the clarity of the job description vs what was discussed over the interview. In a video he posted, Raj also talked about how the times have changed today and maybe SME’s should keep up.
A quick search on Linkedin shows that there are no jobs posted in the company Delane works at. So, were these candidates headhunted? If that is the case, something went wrong during the matching process because if these candidates are demanding a higher pay than the one advertised, they were probably from MNCs.
Calvin Cheng gave his two cents worth on the difficulties of hiring as well, which came off as a little aggressive.
While the hirers agreed with Calvin’s sentiments, a netizen pointed out a valid fact.

Speaking to a local HR specialist in the R&D industry, J, he said that it was easier to interview the local graduates because they understand that not all their demands can be met during a pandemic. They were willing to work as long as the pay was reasonable with what they can offer to the company.
“‘I am pro-singapore workforce but…. they make it harder for us to consider employing them. So stop blaming companies for considering non locals. We did try our best.” -Delane Lim
However, J also went on to say that he’s interviewed demanding candidates that are non-locals and they are less likely to compromise as compared to the local graduates in a time of pandemic.
In another post, Delane clarified his company’s stance on prioritizing employing locals/SPR.

Reporter’s Opinion: While there are demanding graduates, it is not fair to say that they aren’t willing to suffer unlike the older generation.
A company that prides itself for “innovative use of technology & design” and “bringing businesses to the next digital frontier through innovation”, it contradicts the statement “Many are not willing to be humble and not willing to suffer. They prefer to work smart than hard unlike our older generation.”
Honestly, if you hunt for candidates with “solid CVs” you gotta be able to pay for what they offer. It is a matter of managing your expectation as an SME too. If these people are used to being in MNCs, they are used to the pay and the lifestyle the pay provides.
Clearly you had other candidates that matches the pay and JD given, judging from the amount of comments who asked for more details.

I mean, there are other candidates out there willing to work for the pay given and the experience they will gain. But let’s just say you choose not to consider them because their CVs aren’t “solid” enough, whose fault is that?
The new generation is a different breed. Yes, we are hungry for success, but we also want the healthy work-life balance that the previous generation were not given. We value our happiness and health over demands of a job that will not appreciate our contributions at the end of the day.
